Sight Reading App Staff, Rhythm & Note Naming Drills
Soloist Sight Reading gives you a free daily drill in landmark notes, note naming, key signatures and rhythm from real notation, with no ads and no account. Soloist Pro is one US$14.99 Lifetime purchase, and nothing renews. When the app listens, on the microphone or a MIDI keyboard, it grades on your iPhone and says “couldn't hear you clearly” instead of inventing a wrong note.
Read the staff like a language.
Listening and MIDI grading run on your iPhone, and your practice audio is never uploaded. No account, no ads. Sight Reading support · Privacy · Terms of Use
Sight reading is the other half of musicianship. Soloist Sight Reading 1.2.0 trains it in short daily sets: landmark notes, note naming, key signatures and rhythm from real notation. For each rhythm you pick its count, hear the bar, then tap it back and see whether you were early, on time or late. The daily drill is free and ongoing, not a countdown trial. Soloist Pro is a one-time US$14.99 Lifetime purchase. It adds the Reading Score, a one-take Exam Mode, review of the exact notes you miss, and every drill family, including play-or-sing drills that listen.
A free drill every day
Landmark notes, note naming, key signatures and rhythm reading in a short daily set. It is not a countdown trial, and it needs no account.
From landmarks to every clef
Start from treble G, bass F and middle C. Treble and bass come first; the alto clef joins at the Working Reader tier and the tenor clef at the Advanced tier. Answer in letter names, fixed-Do solfège or German names, and turn the landmark hints off when you are ready.
Rhythm from real notation
Quarters, halves, whole notes, dotted notes, eighths, sixteenths, triplets and rests, in 4/4 and 3/4. Pick the count, such as “1 & 2 3 4”, hear the bar, then tap it back. Soloist marks your tapping early, on time or late.
Play-or-sing drills that listen
With Pro, play the written note on your instrument, sing it, or use a MIDI keyboard. Any octave counts, and the note is checked on your iPhone. Sound it can't hear clearly is never graded, and you can always tap the name instead.
A Reading Score you earn
In the Score tab, nine levels of source-identified public-domain passages sit on a 100–999 scale. Only a completed, clearly graded take adds a point to your curve.
Grading that doesn't guess
In the Score tab, play into the microphone or connect a wired or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard. Both are graded on your iPhone by the same rules. When the microphone can't hear you well enough, it says “couldn't hear you clearly” and your score doesn't change.
Exam Mode and read-ahead
Study an excerpt for 30 seconds, then play it once, with no restart. Vanishing notation trains your eyes to read ahead of the playhead.
The notes you miss come back
Pro remembers the exact note, clef and rhythm you got wrong and brings each one back when it is due. Custom studio drills, shareable drill sets and a plain-language weekly report for a teacher or parent come with it. The report never includes a recording.
A day of sight-reading practice
Warm up from landmarks.
Name treble G, bass F and middle C first, then read the notes around them. The landmark hints can stay on until you no longer need them.
Read, count, tap.
Name each note or key signature as it appears. For rhythm, pick the count, hear the bar, then tap it back and see whether you were early, on time or late.
Take one honest reading.
With Soloist Pro, the Score tab gives you a 30-second preview and one take on the microphone or a MIDI keyboard. A take it couldn't hear clearly adds nothing to your score.
Free charts, guides & references
Two free beginner guides: reading alto and tenor clef from middle C, and counting rhythms out loud.
Questions
What is free?
The daily drill: landmark notes, note naming, key signatures and rhythm reading from real notation, where you pick the count and tap it back. It is not a countdown trial. There are no ads and no account.
How much is Soloist Pro?
Soloist Sight Pro Lifetime is a one-time purchase of US$14.99 in the US. There is no subscription and nothing renews. The App Store shows your local price before you buy, and Restore Purchases is in Settings.
I subscribed before. Do I keep Pro?
Yes. Earlier subscribers keep Pro, and can switch to Lifetime in Settings.
What does Soloist Pro add?
The Score tab's 100–999 Reading Score and one-take Exam Mode, review of your exact note and rhythm errors, every drill family (ledger lines, intervals, grand staff and play-or-sing), custom studio drills, a weekly practice report for a teacher or parent, and shareable drill sets.
Does it listen to me play?
Yes, in two places, both part of Soloist Pro. Play-or-sing drills listen for the written note on the microphone or a MIDI keyboard, in any octave, and you can still tap the name. The Score tab grades whole passages on the microphone or a wired or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard. Everything is graded on your iPhone, and sound it can't hear clearly is never graded.
How does the rhythm drill work?
Each prompt is one bar of real notation in 4/4 or 3/4: quarters, halves, whole notes, dotted notes, eighths, sixteenths, triplets and rests. Choose its count, such as “1 & 2 3 4”, play the bar to hear it, then tap it back. The app marks your tapping early, on time or late. The patterns grow with your tier, from whole notes and quarters up to triplets and sixteenths.
Which clefs does it cover?
Treble, bass, alto and tenor, plus the grand staff in Pro. The free drills start with treble and bass, add the alto clef at the Working Reader tier and the tenor clef at the Advanced tier. Note names can be letters, fixed-Do solfège or German names.
Who is it for?
Anyone who reads music, on any instrument or voice. Most drills are answered by tapping, so you can practise without your instrument to hand.
Does my audio leave my iPhone?
No. Listening and MIDI grading run on your iPhone, and practice audio and MIDI performances are never uploaded. There is no account to create.
