Questions
Why can't I get a single clean note?
Almost always too much mouth on the harp or too much air. Pucker as if sipping through a straw, push the harp deeper between your lips, and breathe gently. Hole 4 is the easiest place to start; the tuner in Harmonica Studio names the hole and breath it hears, so you can check you are on the hole you meant.
What key harmonica should I buy first?
A 10-hole diatonic in C. Nearly all beginner books, videos, and tab assume C, and most songs on this site's free tab pages are written for it (a few name a D harp). Our free harmonica positions and keys guide shows which harp to reach for when a song is in another key.
What do the numbers and arrows in harmonica tab mean?
The number is the hole, counted from the low end. Blow (exhale) is shown as + or ↑, draw (inhale) as − or ↓, and an apostrophe or ' marks a bend — one per half step. So −4' is hole 4 draw, bent down a half step.
Why won't my notes bend?
A bend is a change of mouth shape, not more suction. Start on hole 4 draw with a clean single note and slide the tongue back, as if saying ee → oo. Our free bending deep-dive explains the mechanism and which holes bend how far.
Diatonic or chromatic?
Harmonica Studio is built around the standard 10-hole Richter diatonic harp, the one used in blues, folk, rock, and country.
