Ocarina Studio is a focused teacher for a real 12-hole ocarina: a structured course of 12 lessons for the common 12-hole Alto C, the exact fingering for every note including both sub-holes, a chromatic tuner, and a note-by-note verdict from your microphone that says Not graded rather than guess. Every song in the app is a public-domain melody.
Every note, its exact fingering
Free 12-hole Alto C and G fingering charts run from A4 to F6, including both sub-holes. While you play, the current note, its fingering, your pitch difference and the beat stay on screen.
A structured course that listens
12 lessons in four units: steady first notes and clean finger changes, then the sub-holes, leaps and the upper register, playing in time, and cross-fingerings. The first 3 lessons are free.
A verdict you can trust
The app checks the room before a graded take, then marks every note clean, timing, off or missed. If it did not hear enough, the take says Not graded instead of inventing a score.
A free long-tone coach
Pick a note and a hold of 4, 6 or 10 seconds, hear the reference, then hold it. A live pitch line runs against a ±10-cent band, and the verdict (steady, sharp, flat or wobbly) comes with ocarina breath advice and spots a drifting note.
Bring your own MusicXML
Import MusicXML or compressed MXL files on your iPhone, as many as you like, and play along privately. Ocarina Studio Pro adds grading for imported pieces.
How the listening works
Quiet the room.
Before a graded take, the app listens to the room for a moment so background noise is not mistaken for your playing.
Play.
Follow the highlighted note, its 12-hole fingering and the visible beat. Pitch is analysed on your iPhone, and no recording is uploaded.
Read the verdict.
Each note is marked clean, timing, off or missed, with a star rating and an accuracy score. Too little clear sound means Not graded, never a made-up score.
Free charts, guides & references
Free references for the 12-hole ocarina: the full fingering chart, a beginner path, a buying checklist, and guides to playing in tune and reading tabs.
Songs & free notation
26 public-domain and original pieces with free 12-hole fingering notation, published on this site as study material. The app has its own library of 36 public-domain songs with graded takes; 8 of the melodies here have a version in it.
Questions
Why does my ocarina squeak or sound airy?
Usually a hole that is not fully sealed. Cover each hole with the flat pad of the finger, not the tip, and check the two thumb holes underneath and the two small sub-holes, which leak most often. Our free guide to flat, sharp and squeaky ocarina notes walks through every cause.
Why do my notes sound flat or sharp?
On an ocarina, breath pressure sets the pitch: more air raises the note, less air lowers it. Low notes want a gentle breath and high notes a firmer one. Ocarina Studio's free long-tone coach lets you hold one note against a ±10-cent band and tells you whether it was steady, sharp, flat or wobbly, with breath advice to fix it.
Which ocarina does it teach?
The course is built for the common 12-hole Alto C, including its two sub-holes, and the app also has a 12-hole G fingering chart. Your maker's chart wins where accidental fingerings differ.
What stays free?
The chromatic tuner, the long-tone coach, the 12-hole C and G fingering charts with both sub-holes, the first 3 of the 12 course lessons, 12 songs with graded takes, unlimited private MusicXML import with play-along, and an on-screen ocarina you can play by touch or by blowing into the microphone. No account and no ads.
What does Ocarina Studio Pro add?
All 12 lessons across the four units, the other 24 of the app's 36 public-domain songs, Wait Mode (the music waits until it hears the written note in tune) and grading for the MusicXML pieces you import.
How much is Ocarina Studio Pro?
Pay once, no subscription. In the United States, Ocarina Studio Pro Lifetime is US$9.99, paid once, and never renews. Apple shows your regional price before purchase. If you subscribed in an earlier version, manage that subscription in iOS Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions.
Does my audio leave my iPhone?
No. Pitch processing and grading run on your device, and no recording is uploaded. The MusicXML files you import stay on your iPhone.
What music is included?
The app's library is 36 public-domain melodies, 12 of them free, from Ode to Joy and Amazing Grace to Au Clair de la Lune and Morning Mood, each checked note by note. There is no modern licensed music. The ocarina song pages on this site are a separate, free collection of notation for study, including original Playsoloist studies.
What is the Listen tab?
Listen plays short original melodies for the 12-hole Alto C, written by the Ocarina Studio team, so you can hear a tune and then find it on your own instrument. Posting your own playing is not open.
