Tin Whistle (Penny Whistle) App Graded Lessons & Tunes

See which holes to cover, hear the note, then try a short phrase — with a free, offline book of 3,000 community-sourced Irish tunes and no ads.

Irish trad, fingering by fingering.

Microphone analysis runs on your iPhone; your whistle audio is not recorded or uploaded. You can start without an account. No ads.

The tin whistle (penny whistle) is cheap, portable and hard to learn from a video: you cannot see which holes are covered or hear whether your note matched. Session Whistle shows the six-hole shape, plays the reference note for your whistle's key, and listens on your iPhone while you try a short phrase.

First notes, one hole at a time

Six-hole illustrations and written instructions for D, E and F-sharp, a Hear button for each note, then a five-note phrase and a free first-tune course.

3,000 tunes, free and offline

A community-sourced Irish tune book with staff notation, note tab and fingerings. Slow playback, loop a passage and save session sets. No ads and no tune paywall.

Nine whistle keys, all free

D, A, C, B-flat, E-flat, F, G, Low D and Low F. Reference notes and fingerings follow the key you choose.

A recap that says what it heard

Your pitch score sits beside the number of notes heard. Unheard notes get no grade, and an unfinished phrase leaves your best take unchanged.

Optional Pro

A second-tune course, guided technique exercises, Off the Page memory practice and a separate rhythm-tapping drill.

What the listening check does — and does not do

  1. Listen.

Start the microphone when you are ready. Session Whistle analyses the audio on your iPhone; your whistle audio is not recorded or uploaded.

  2. Compare pitch.

Each note it hears is compared with the phrase for your whistle's key. Pitch practice does not assess rhythm; rhythm has its own tapping drill in Pro.

  3. Report honestly.

The recap shows the pitch score and how many notes were heard. Notes it did not hear get no grade, and a practice card only includes the score and coverage — never audio.

Questions

Which whistles does Session Whistle support?

Nine keys: D (the standard high D), A, C, B-flat, E-flat, F, G, Low D and Low F. The six-hole fingering shapes are the same in every key; the app changes the reference notes to match the whistle you choose, and every key is free.

Is the tune book really free?

Yes. The 3,000 community-sourced Irish tunes, with staff notation, whistle tab and fingerings, work offline with no ads and no tune paywall. Cancelling Pro does not remove them.

Does it grade my rhythm?

No. The listening check compares pitch and tells you how many notes it heard. Rhythm is practised separately in Pro by tapping the phrase at a tempo you choose; that drill checks timing, not pitch.

Is my playing uploaded?

No. Microphone analysis happens on your iPhone and your whistle audio is not recorded or uploaded. The optional typed technique answers need sign-in and send only the question you type.

What does Pro add?

The second-tune course, guided technique exercises, Off the Page memory practice, the rhythm-tapping drill and more teaching tools. Pro is optional, and local prices appear in the app before you buy.

Can I pay once instead of subscribing?

Yes. Session Whistle Pro Lifetime is US$6.99 in the United States, paid once with nothing to renew, and unlocks every on-device Pro feature. Monthly and yearly subscriptions are still available and also include typed technique answers. Apple shows the price for your region before purchase, and Restore Purchases is in Settings.
