How to practise Ada Chautaal
Ada Chautaal runs fourteen matras as seven two-beat vibhags, a brisk, angular cycle used in khayal at medium tempo. In this library it is marked with sam on 1, khali on 3 and 11, and claps on 5, 7, 9 and 13 — one hand gesture every two matras, so counting it is a constant conversation between clap and wave. Markings for this taal vary between traditions; learn one scheme thoroughly and stay consistent. The theka mixes ringing and closed strokes tightly — dhin tirakita dhin na, then the bare tun na / kat ta centre — so practice it in two-matra cells before chaining the full cycle. The kat–ta pair on matras 7–8 is the pivot: keep it dry and exactly in time. Recite the bols with the seven hand gestures until you can name any matra number on demand; in an odd-feeling cycle like this, instant orientation is what keeps accompaniment honest.
