The theka, matra by matra

Thumri and ghazal; the swung cousin of Teental

× = sam (the cycle’s point of resolution) · 2 3 = tali (clap) · 0 = khali (wave) · numbers count the matras

Public domain. Traditional Hindustani taal (public-domain cyclic metric framework); theka transcribed conservatively from the Playsoloist Tabla practice library.

How to practise Addha

Addha shares Teental's sixteen-matra frame — sam on 1, claps on 5 and 13, khali on 9 — but displaces its strokes to create the swinging, off-centre gait beloved of thumri and ghazal accompaniment. The theka's rests fall inside the vibhags (dhin – dhin dha / dha tin – na …), so strokes arrive in leaning pairs rather than on an even grid. Practice it against a strict subdivided count: the temptation is to let the written rests smear into approximate swing, but the idiom only works when the displacement is exact. Recite the theka with claps until the lean is reliable, then play it at a relaxed medium tempo — Addha pushed too fast turns brittle. Contrast drills help enormously: alternate one cycle of plain Teental with one of Addha at identical tempo and feel the same skeleton tilt. The khali quarter lightens to tin and ta; keep it airy. Mastering Addha is mastering the difference between groove and grid.
