How to practise Bhajani

Bhajani is an eight-matra theka in the Keharwa family, used to accompany bhajan and kirtan singing: two four-beat vibhags, sam on 1, khali on 5. Its pattern — dhin na dhin dhin / na tin na dhin — rolls rather than marches; the repeated dhin strokes keep an open, ringing bass under the melody, which is what gives devotional accompaniment its warmth. Practice it as a loop with your voice first, then on the drum with attention to the bayan: every dhin should carry the same rounded tone, and the single tin on matra 6 is the khali signal — make it audibly bass-free. Because bhajan singing often runs long and steady, endurance is the real skill: set a modest tempo and hold the theka for several unbroken minutes, listening for creeping speed. When that is stable, vary dynamics — softer under verses, fuller toward sam — without touching the tempo. That separation of loudness from speed is the accompanist's core discipline, and Bhajani is an ideal place to build it.
