Brahma Theka, Structure & Bols

Brahma is a long ceremonial cycle from the pakhawaj and dhrupad world, presented here as twenty-eight matras in four seven-beat vibhags, with sam on 1, claps on 8 and 22, and khali on 15. Sources record Brahma taal in more than one form — including different division schemes and a shorter variant — so treat this structure as the library's convention. The theka is built from one seven-matra cell (dha dha dhin ta kita dha tirakita) stated four times, with the third statement turned khali (ta ta tin…). That construction is the practice plan: master the single cell until it is utterly even, then chain four, flipping the bass off for the third. Count the vibhags on your hands — clap, clap, wave, clap, one gesture per seven matras — and keep a subdivided pulse underneath, because in a cycle this long the only real danger is drift. Long taals such as Brahma are endurance and orientation training: the material is simple, but holding the map for twenty-eight beats is not.
