How to practise Chautaal

Chautaal is the twelve-matra cycle of dhrupad, historically played on pakhawaj, and its theka keeps that ancestry: open, weighty bols — dha dha dhin ta, kita, tirakita — with none of the filigree of khayal thekas. The cycle divides into six two-beat vibhags with sam on 1, claps on 5, 9 and 11, and khali on 3 and 7. Play it with full strokes: the dha pairs should be broad and resonant, the kita and tirakita clusters crisp but unhurried, and the tun–na / kat–ta close should land like a held breath before sam. Practice by reciting the bols in a strong, even voice first — dhrupad rhythm is spoken as much as played — then transfer to the drum at the same deliberate tempo. Resist speeding up; the taal's authority comes from evenness. Pair it with Sooltaal, which shares its opening material in a ten-matra frame, to hear how the same vocabulary behaves in two cycles.
