How to practise Dadra

Dadra is the six-matra cycle that carries the light-classical genre named after it, along with countless folk and film songs: two three-beat vibhags, sam on 1, khali on 4. The standard theka — dha dhin na / dha tin na — is often the first thing a tabla student ever plays, and its lesson is the bayan: dha and dhin sound both drums, then the khali half lightens to tin as the bass drops away. Practice the clap–wave pair while reciting until the two halves feel like question and answer. Once the plain theka is even, the library's thumri-ang variation doubles the density with tirakita fills — the classic accompaniment texture for slow, expressive singing. Move between plain and filled cycles without letting the tempo drift; that discipline is exactly what song accompaniment demands. The Dadra gat in the library sits on this same six-beat wheel, so use theka cycles as the frame around every repetition of the composition.
