How to practise Deepchandi

Deepchandi is the fourteen-matra cycle of thumri and light-classical singing, divided 3–4–3–4 with sam on 1, claps on 4 and 11, and khali on 8. Its theka breathes: dha dhin – / dha dha tin – / ta tin – / dha dha dhin –, with a rest closing every vibhag. Those rests are the style — they give the vocalist room to bend around the beat — so practice them as sounded silences: count the empty matra fully and keep the bayan's pressure alive through it. Recite with the clap pattern until the alternating 3+4 groups sway rather than stumble. On the drum, the paired dha–dha strokes should lean forward slightly in feel while the grid stays exact; Deepchandi accompaniment lives in that controlled looseness. The khali section (ta tin –) drops the bass entirely — make it noticeably lighter. Work at a relaxed medium-slow tempo: pushed fast, Deepchandi loses the lilt that is its entire purpose.
