How to practise Dhumali
Dhumali is a rolling eight-matra theka in the Keharwa family, written here with two strokes per matra: dha–ge–na and dha–ti–na figures across the first half, then na–ka–ta and dhin–ti–na to close. Sam is on 1 and khali on 5, but the texture is the point — the doubled subdivision creates a continuous, tumbling surface used for light-classical and song accompaniment. Practice it first at half speed as sixteen even pulses, placing the rests exactly, because the internal gaps after dha and dhin are what make the pattern bounce instead of blur. Keep ge and ka soft; they are connective tissue, not accents. The khali half dries out the bass — exaggerate that contrast while learning. Once fluent, practice moving between plain Keharwa and Dhumali over an unchanging pulse: the ability to thicken or thin the groove without shifting tempo is precisely how a tabla player shapes a song's energy in performance.
