How to practise Ektaal
Ektaal spans twelve matras in six two-beat vibhags — sam on 1, claps on 5, 9 and 11, khali on 3 and 7 — and it is everywhere: slow vilambit khayal and fast drut compositions both live in it. Its theka is built from two signature figures: the dhage–tirakita cell and the bare tun–na / kat–ta centre. Practice those two cells in isolation until the tirakita is even at any speed, then assemble the cycle. In vilambit use each matra is subdivided heavily and the same bol skeleton is stretched across a very long cycle — the library carries a vilambit theka on the identical skeleton so you can practice both layas against one memory. Count with the hands: the clap–wave alternation lands differently than in Teental, and the khali arriving as early as matra 3 is what trips most learners. The library's Ektaal kayda grows directly out of the theka's dhage–tirakita figure, so the theka you drill here is literally the vocabulary of the composition.
