Farodast Theka, Structure & Bols

Farodast is a rare fourteen-matra taal kept alive mainly in solo tabla playing, with documented recordings by major twentieth-century soloists. This library divides it 4–4–3–3 with sam on 1, claps on 5 and 12, and khali on 9; historical sources record more than one prakar of Farodast with differing divisions, so hold this structure as the library's convention. The theka runs dha tirakita dhin na through the clapped vibhags and dries to ta tirakita tin for the khali stretch — a compact, rolling pattern that sits beautifully at medium tempo. The interesting joint is the shift from 4+4 to 3+3: halfway through, the vibhags shorten, and the cycle seems to accelerate even at fixed tempo. Count it on your hands until that illusion becomes a felt feature. Keep the three tirakita clusters interchangeable-identical, and let the final dhin ring into sam. As a practice vehicle, Farodast teaches asymmetric phrasing better than almost anything in the common repertoire.
