Rare dhrupad-lineage 15-beat cycle

× = sam (the cycle’s point of resolution) · 2 3 = tali (clap) · 0 = khali (wave) · numbers count the matras

Where traditions differ: Published sources also record a 4–4–3–4 division for Gaja Jhampa; the 4–4–4–3 scheme shown is this library's convention. The khali at matra 9 is the stable landmark across sources.

Public domain. Traditional Hindustani taal (public-domain cyclic metric framework); theka transcribed conservatively from the Playsoloist Tabla practice library.

How to practise Gaja Jhampa

Gaja Jhampa is a rare fifteen-matra taal of the dhrupad and pakhawaj lineage. This library presents it divided 4–4–4–3 with sam on 1, claps on 5 and 13, and khali on 9; published sources also record a 4–4–3–4 division, so treat the internal grouping as convention rather than law — the khali at matra 9 is the stable landmark. The theka's first half rocks between dhin and ta with a kita pivot; the close is pure pakhawaj cadence — tit kata gadi gina dha — the same cluster family found in Tevra. Practice that four-cluster ending in isolation, two component strokes per cluster, until it lands with the final dha exactly on sam. Then attach it to the cycle and feel how the whole taal exists to launch that cadence. Count the vibhags by hand, exaggerate the khali's dryness at matra 9, and keep the tempo stately: this is ceremonial material, and evenness — not speed — is what makes it imposing.
