How to practise Jhaptaal

Jhaptaal is the ten-matra cycle most players learn third, after Teental and Ektaal: divided 2–3–2–3 with sam on 1, clap on 3, khali on 6 and clap again on 8. Its charm is the alternation of two- and three-beat groups — the theka (dhin na / dhin dhin na / tin na / dhin dhin na) states the grouping so plainly that the taal teaches itself if you recite it. Practice with the hand pattern first: one gesture per vibhag, saying the bols until the 2+3 lilt is physical. On the drum, the whole third vibhag is the khali statement — tin na — and the bayan's re-entry on matra 8 is the moment to place with care. Keep the na strokes ringing and identical; they are the taal's skeleton. The library's Jhaptaal kayda and tihai both resolve on sam from this theka, so alternate theka cycles with the compositions to internalise where phrases must land.
