How to practise Jhumra

Jhumra is a fourteen-matra vilambit cycle divided 3–4–3–4, with sam on 1, claps on 4 and 11, and khali on 8. It is a slow, heavily ornamented theka: the cycle opens with dhin and an empty second matra, and the dhage–tirakita figures that end each half give it its characteristic swaying gait. Practice the empty matras first — the rest after the opening dhin must be counted as strictly as any stroke, or the asymmetric 3+4 grouping collapses. Clap the vibhag pattern while reciting the bols until the two three-matra sections feel as stable as the fours. On the drum, let the open bayan carry through the dhin–dhin pairs and lift it cleanly for the khali half, where tin replaces dhin. Because Jhumra serves slow khayal, work with a long subdivided pulse and aim for a cycle you could halve in tempo without drifting; steadiness at extreme slowness is the entire skill this taal trains.
