Where traditions differ: Published sources divide Lakshmi taal quite differently (including eighteen one-beat vibhags); the 6–6–6 scheme shown is this library's convention.

Public domain. Traditional Hindustani taal (public-domain cyclic metric framework); theka transcribed conservatively from the Playsoloist Tabla practice library.

How to practise Lakshmi

Lakshmi is a rare eighteen-matra cycle preserved in the pakhawaj repertoire and in taal-demonstration recordings. This library presents it as three six-beat vibhags with sam on 1, khali on 7 and 13, and claps mid-vibhag on 4, 10 and 16; published sources divide Lakshmi taal quite differently, so hold this marking as the library's convention rather than a universal standard. The theka is a six-matra cell — dha dhin na dha tirakita dha — stated three times, with the middle statement dried out to tin and ta for the khali stretch. Practice accordingly: perfect the cell, then chain three, flipping the bayan off and on cleanly at matras 7 and 13. The mid-vibhag claps are unusual — mark them by voice while your hands keep the wave and clap gestures at the vibhag boundaries, and the double orientation will lock the cycle in memory. As with all long rare taals, the win is navigational: eighteen even matras with no drift and an unmistakable sam.
