How to practise Pancham Sawari
Pancham Sawari is a fifteen-matra cycle associated above all with solo tabla playing, where sustaining clarity across an odd, long cycle is itself the display of mastery. This library presents it divided 3–4–4–4 with sam on 1, claps on 4 and 8, and khali on 12 — one documented form of the taal; sources differ on its internal divisions, so treat the marking as this library's convention and learn it consistently. The theka strings dhin–na chains through the first three vibhags, drops a tirakita pivot on matra 6, and closes with the dry tin na kat ta — the khali-side signature that tells you sam is near. Practice in two stages: first count 3+4+4+4 on your hands until fifteen stops feeling like sixteen-minus-one, then recite the theka and mark where the kat–ta pair sits relative to sam. On the drum, keep the long dhin chains perfectly even; in odd cycles, unevenness reads instantly as being lost.
