Where traditions differ: Published sources mark Rudra taal's divisions in several ways (including eleven one-beat vibhags); the 4–4–3 scheme shown is this library's convention.

Public domain. Traditional Hindustani taal (public-domain cyclic metric framework); theka transcribed conservatively from the Playsoloist Tabla practice library.

How to practise Rudra

Rudra is a rare eleven-matra taal encountered in advanced tabla study and solo repertoire, presented here as three vibhags of 4–4–3 with sam on 1, khali on 5 and a clap on 9; published sources mark Rudra's divisions in several ways, so treat this scheme as the library's convention. The theka moves from open to closed and back — dha dhin na ta / tin na kat ta / dhage tirakita dha — compressing a whole khali-and-return arc into eleven beats. Eleven resists your hands' instinct to find symmetry: count 4+4+3 aloud until the short final vibhag feels like a designed approach to sam rather than a truncation. The dhage–tirakita–dha close is the taal's signature; practice it as an isolated cadence, landing the final dha exactly on sam, then reattach it to the full cycle. Keep kat–ta dry and precise at the centre. Prime-length cycles like Rudra are superb tihai laboratories — any phrase you can land three times into eleven will land anywhere.
