The theka, matra by matra
Khayal, bhajan and instrumental music; the 7-beat cycle whose sam is khali
Theka
× = sam (the cycle’s point of resolution) · 2 3 = tali (clap) · 0 = khali (wave) · numbers count the matras
Public domain. Traditional Hindustani taal (public-domain cyclic metric framework); theka transcribed conservatively from the Playsoloist Tabla practice library.
How to practise Rupak
Rupak is the seven-matra cycle with a famous quirk: its sam is khali. The cycle divides 3–2–2, the first matra is marked with a wave rather than a clap, and claps fall on 4 and 6. The theka states it plainly — tin tin na on the empty opening, then dhin na, dhin na. Because the cycle begins on emptiness, orientation is the whole game: practice by waving on 1 and clapping 4 and 6 while reciting, until landing softly on sam feels natural rather than like a missed beat. On the drum, the opening tin strokes are treble-only; the bayan enters with dhin on matra 4, and that entrance is Rupak's true landmark. Keep the two dhin–na pairs identical in weight. The library's Rupak kayda opens on the empty sam exactly as the theka does — drill the two together and the taal's inverted logic becomes an asset, giving compositions their characteristic suspended landing.
