How to practise Sooltaal

Sooltaal is a ten-matra dhrupad cycle, marked here as five two-beat vibhags with sam on 1, khali on 3 and 9, and claps on 5 and 7. Like Chautaal it descends from pakhawaj practice, and the theka shares Chautaal's opening — dha dha dhin ta kita dha — before closing with tirakita dha tun na in the final vibhags. Treat it as Chautaal's compact sibling: the same broad, open strokes, two matras shorter, with the khali wave arriving both early (matra 3) and late (matra 9) so the cycle feels bracketed by emptiness. Practice the five hand gestures in a loop until the wave–clap–clap–wave pattern around sam stops feeling lopsided. On the drum, give the kita and tirakita clusters their full value at slow tempo — swallowed clusters are the common fault in dhrupad taals — and let tun ring into the final na so the return to the double dha on sam is unmistakable.
