Teental Theka, Structure & Bols

Teental is the workhorse of Hindustani rhythm: sixteen matras in four even vibhags, with sam on 1, claps on 5 and 13, and khali on 9. Learn the clap pattern before the drum — count the cycle on your hands (clap, clap, wave, clap) until the shape is automatic, then recite the theka aloud in time. The theka itself teaches the core hand logic of tabla: the first half is dha-heavy, both drums sounding, and at khali the bayan drops out, turning dha into ta and dhin into tin; the bass re-enters near matra 14 to pull the cycle back toward sam. Practice the standard theka at a slow, even tempo until every dhin rings the same, then use the drut variation, which fills alternate matras with tirakita, to build speed without losing the frame.
