How to practise Tilwada
Tilwada shares Teental's sixteen-matra frame — same vibhags, same clap pattern, khali on 9 — but it is a vilambit theka: it is played slow, and its character comes from what fills the space. The tirakita on matra 2 and the paired tin–tin and dhin–dhin strokes stretch and mark time inside a tempo where a single cycle can last the better part of a minute. Practice it with subdivision: count four or eight pulses inside each matra so the tirakita lands precisely and the long gaps between strokes stay honest. Keep the bayan sustained under the dhin pairs — at slow tempo, uneven bass pressure is the first thing a listener hears. The khali vibhag switches to tin and dry strokes; make the contrast obvious, because in vilambit playing khali is the main landmark your soloist steers by. Alternate cycles of Tilwada and plain Teental at the same slow tempo to feel how two thekas colour one frame differently.
