A trumpet has only seven valve combinations, yet it plays dozens of notes. The valves choose a tube length; your buzz selects one harmonic partial inside that length. That is why an open horn can produce written C, G, C, E, and G as it climbs. A crack often lands on a neighbouring rung while the fingering stays correct.
01 See the partial ladder
The rungs crowd together higher on the horn, so adjacent-partial misses become easier as you ascend. That describes the pitch relationship; it does not diagnose your body.
02 Candidate, not cause
What the evidence can support
With a known valve combination and a stable, audible pitch, the measured sound may align with a neighbouring harmonic instead of the written target.
What it cannot support
A microphone cannot prove that embouchure, air speed, tongue position, pressure, fatigue, or the instrument caused the crack.
The honest sentence is “that measured pitch aligns with a neighbouring harmonic”, not “your embouchure was wrong.” If the sound is quiet, noisy, or unstable, the right conclusion is no conclusion.
03 Try one clean flip
- Play a comfortable open written C and release it cleanly.
- Rest at least as long as you played.
- Keep every valve open and play written G; the buzz, not the valves, changes the note.
- Return to C. Stop when either note becomes forced or unreliable.
